Frequently Asked Questions

The Greek word means “woman caregiver.” A broad term that allows doulas to offer a personalized experience for each client and family they serve.
A doula is not a clinician, a coach, nor a decision maker. A doula is a trained and experienced companion who provides emotional and spiritual support, information, empowerment, physical comfort measures, reassurance and guidance.
“A doula is a compassionate advisor that provides comfort, encouragement, and support during one of life’s most significant moments. An incredible person who empowers, supports and instills self-belief in the women they care for. They are masters at listening, and will advise, encourage, and counsel all whilst reminding women of the power they hold. A truly amazing doula is hard to find, difficult to part with, and impossible to forget.” ~ Unknown
When you are looking for a doula, keep in mind that each doula offers an unparalleled experience. No two doulas are the same, just as no two individuals or families are the same.
Meet with a few and choose a doula who you vibe well with, someone who feels right, and who will support your needs in a compassionate and aligned way - and you won’t go wrong.

A doula is there to provide a 1:1 reassuring presence. They hold space for you and your partner as you turn towards each other and find your rhythm through the waves of labor.
Benefits of working with a doula:
lower pain perception during labor
less chance for cesarean birth
can decrease the length of labor by 25%
reduced epidural rates
It is important to ask yourself why you want to hire a doula. After doing your research, what are the benefits of hiring a doula for you?
Why hire me?
As a nurse and doula, I understand the reverence birth requires. I approach each sacred birth space with the utmost respect.
I believe that it takes two to make a babe and two to birth a babe. That is why I offer a hands-off (less physical) approach to doula work. Meaning that I like to meet with you ahead of time to help you and your partner emotionally, mentally, and physically prepare for birth.
During labor and birth, I am there to hold space, encourage, and assist with breathwork as you find your rhythm. I will help guide you and your partner with emotional and physical comfort measures as you connect with each other, babe, and your mind, body, soul.

A postpartum doula is not a housekeeper or babysitter. A postpartum doula helps facilitate holistic healing from the inside out by providing specialized, supportive, and revitalizing postpartum care for mothers.
The first three months after birth is a delicate transitional moment in life that influences the health and wellbeing of the mother, babe, partner and family.
During this time period, it is essential that the mother receive the care and support required to optimize bonding with babe, whole person wellness and mind/body/soul healing.
Postpartum doula support ensures the mother receives the nurturing, nourishment, and tender loving touch that is needed to support a full recovery after giving birth. While also helping the partner feel more comfortable in their new role as well.
Why hire me?
As a postpartum doula, I am there to mother the mother by offering nutritional, emotional, physical, and spiritual support that is tailored to each individuals postpartum needs.
During our prenatal visit we will chat about what to expect and how to support healing during the 4th trimester, creating a calm and healing postpartum environment, foods to prep ahead of time, breastfeeding, answering questions, and reviewing wellness techniques that you can utilize to help ease this transitional time in your life.
During postpartum visits you can expect to be nurtured with a calming and loving presence. Within my three postpartum packages I offer:
guidance on creating a comfy cozy postpartum sanctuary within your home
nourishing, warming meals such as soups, stews and bone broth
chore list and meal train assistance
herbal foot soaks and baths made with hand selected herbs for womb-healing
foot massage
gentle massage
breathwork
energy cleansing
breastfeeding support
heated castor oil packs
relaxing nap meditation
womb remembrance bath
closing of the womb ceremony after 40 days
dishes, laundry, light cleaning and tidying so you can focus on bonding with babe and resting

A Partner Support session is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to create a bubble of love to birth your babe into as you turn towards each other during pregnancy, labor, and birth.
It takes two to make a babe and two to birth one. This course will help guide you and your partner in opening dialogue about how you can be best supported as you find your own rhythm.
I believe all life is sacred and that with love, compassion, and community we can change the world. It all begins with birth while cultivating support for the mother, father, and babe.
During your Partner Support session we will discuss labor positions, pushing positions, breathing techniques, and how your partner can best support you during labor, birth and postpartum.
-
The labor and birth session is a two hour long educational class where we discuss nutrition in pregnancy, labor and birth tips, labor education, birth plan template, labor positions, hip movement, cervical changes, the birthing process, and breastfeeding amongst other things.
This session is designed to give you the tools you need to remind you of your strength and capability while you find your rhythm throughout your unique labor and birthing experience.
Pair this session with the Partner Support Session to better prepare you and your partner for the ebbs and flows of birth by opening up dialogue about what you need and how your partner can best support you as you both find your rhythm - together.

When a baby is born, it is not only the birth of a babe, it is also the birth of a mother, father, and family unit. This will be one of the most important days of your life. A milestone to remember forever. Hiring a birth photographer insures that you receive quality images that tell your unique birth story. The story of a chapter that seems to stand still for so long during labor, but ends up going by faster than you ever could have imagined once you’ve reached the other side.
Imagine getting your entire birth experience documented and not having to worry about who is taking pictures. Hiring a birth photographer allows you, your partner and family to be fully present and in the moment because no one is having to think about who is photographing.
As a nurse and doula, I understand the reverence birth requires. I approach birth with the utmost respect and will remain a fly-on-the wall as I document your sacred journey. Unless called upon, I will remain silent and in the background so you can focus on finding and maintaining your rhythm of labor.
It is my goal and honor to capture and deliver photos that you love and can look back on for the rest of your life and see just how beautiful, strong and powerful you are.
The flow of it all:
Initial Consultation
We will meet in person or virtually for a 30 minute consultation to see if we vibe well. We will chat about my fly-on-the-wall role in your birth space and what you envision for your birth documentation. We’ll also go over questions and specifics.
When you are ready to move forward, you will sign the contract and pay the 45% deposit.
After signing the contract, I will give you a questionnaire that asks all the little details I need to know to make your experience the best I can.
24/7 On-Call for YOU
Once you are 37 weeks, I will be on call 24/7 for you. This means I will stay within 2 hours of your birth location and you will be able to reach me by phone day or night.
At this time, I ask for the remaining balance due for services.
The Big BIRTH Day!
When your labor begins, let me know! We will keep in touch and decide when it’s the best time for me to head your way. I like to arrive around active labor/5cm.
I need approximately 2 hours from the time you contact me to the time I arrive to assure I get there in time.
During your labor, I will capture your unique, sacred journey with raw, powerful, documentary-style photographs (we discuss specifics during the consultation/questionnaire).
I will stay for 1-2 hours after babe is born to document the special moments during that time as well (weight, foot prints, skin to skin, etc.)
Digital Image Delivery
I will send you one sneak peek image within 24 hours of your delivery
All final edits will be delivered to you within 3-4 weeks
All packages and add-ons come with a print release so you can print wherever and whenever you want

Newborn lifestyle photos are a wonderful way to document special, lovable moments within the first few days to weeks after birth. Plus, it gives you time to rest and freshen up while still documenting how small babe is in your arms and how tiny their little hands and feet are before they start growing at supersonic speed. The first few weeks go by so fast, even if you are cluster feeding and time seems like an eternity (hang in there momma, you got this!). With pictures, you’re able to slow down time and remember those precious first couple days or weeks before they have flown by without you even realizing it.
I would love to document this special milestone moment in your life and deliver precious photos for you to cherish forever.

What to expect for the photo session:
I like to do newborn lifestyle shoots in your home and during the day for best lighting. But you get to choose what day after birth you would like me to take photos depending on what works best for you and your family. I usually recommend 1-6 weeks after birth.

Consciously connecting with your breath is the beginning of wellness and healing.
Breathwork is a form of energy work. An intentional use of breath that helps regulate the mental, emotional and physical state as it moves energy through the body.
Breathwork can help ease stress, promote relaxation, expand lung capacity, increase energy and awareness, boost immunity, reduce pain, supports a healthy sleep cycle, can release toxins, trauma, fear and other negative energies.
*** It is important to note that breathwork along with other energy work may lead to an emotional response, which is perfectly natural and normal ***
*** Also important to mention that breathwork and energy work is non-medical. If you are in need of medical assistance or advice, please seek out a licensed holistic practitioner or doctor ***

Wellness starts with You.
The first step: the moment You decide You want to be well. You are the one who gets to make that choice for yourself. And everything You need to take that first step - and all the rest of the steps - is within You.
The second step: defining what wellness means for YOU. Wellness is unique for everyone. And You get to decide what that looks like for your personal needs and goals.
The third step: once you figure out what wellness means for You, the third step is taking small action steps towards your goal(s). By practicing daily healthy habits, You break the cycle of unhealthy habits - one habit at a time, one day at a time, one breath at a time. No need to rush. And soon, all those healthy daily habits will transform you from surviving to thriving. All You have to do is take the first step.
If you’re reading this, that means you have taken the first step! Congrats my friend!
We are all on our own journey - each of us requiring an individualized approach to wellbeing as we learn, grow, blossom, and flow. Which means, each wellness session is just as unique as the client I am working with. Everyone has different wellness goals and I am simply here to help You through the transitions of it all because no one should have to go at it alone.
I usually suggest a month long commitment where we meet once a week (virtually or in person) to discuss wellness goals, how to take small action steps towards those goals, and how to go about it, one step at a time.
My goal is to help you build confidence in your abilities to take action steps towards your wellness goals - whatever they may be. There is no rush, no pressure, no guilt or shame. Just me, by your side, cheering you on every step of the way.

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” ~ Albert Einstein
Forest bathing originated in Japan in the 1980’s and is known as Shinrin-yoku. A practice of connecting with and bathing in the ambiance and energy of the forest.
This practice is beneficial for both physical and mental well being. It can reduce stress, promote feelings of happiness and awe, lower blood pressure and heart rate, increase vitality, help stimulate recovery, and assist in connection with your mind/body/soul/spirit.
I personally call my practice nature bathing because I like to spend time bathing in all natural habitats, not just forests.
The purpose and goal of this guided nature bathing experience is to help one slow down and consciously connect with the natural world that surrounds us. I believe as humans, we are part of nature and thus have a deeply rooted bond with the natural elements.
During our session, You will be guided through breathwork, mindfulness, and grounding exercises. There will also be time for quiet, self-paced reflection and connection.
Nature walks are approximately 1 mile in length, and can last anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on each individual.
Expect to feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and relaxed after your nature bath.
Available for individual or group sessions.

Hello Friends!
If you read the first tid bit of my intro earlier - this section will give you a little more of a back-story, and if you want even more info - go check out my first blog :)
My passions have evolved over the years as I continue to learn and grow, but they have always revolved around nature, animals, and helping others -specifically in the birthing community.
In nursing school, I went on a medical mission trip to Nicaragua where I had the honor of assisting a local nurse and doctor with three back to back deliveries. One birthing table and one post-delivery bed. Just lil ole me, with my pocket-sized Spanish dictionary, only able to understand bits of Spanish here and there… but somehow was still able to understand what needed to be done. I was hooked. I knew birth work was in my future!
As a nurse for 6+ years and a DONA trained doula, I have gained invaluable knowledge that I am so grateful for. Since nursing school I knew I wanted to be a birth worker of some sort. But it wasn’t until I had the privilege of working with a doula on the labor and delivery unit in 2017 when I realized that I wanted to use my nursing background to further help individuals more holistically as a birth and postpartum doula. Seeing women support other women was beautiful, but witnessing their natural, whole-person approach was life-changing. And thus I began to research and learn how I could serve the birthing community in a similar way.
Fast forward to 2022, at the age of 29 - while working as a postpartum nurse and doula - I was diagnosed with Long-haul Covid, POTS, Pericarditis, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), and was ordered to stop working and prioritize rest and healing by my cardiologist. During this downtime I was faced with the reality of not being able to continue my career as a doula or nurse, and no income. One night while meditating, praying (and sobbing), a sense of calm washed over me. I realized that I was in control of my reaction to the situation I was in and that I could still be of service in the birthing community one way or another someday. I reached out to a doula friend who offered to let me borrow her camera until I could afford my own and the rest is history!
I started doing one birth or newborn photography session a month to gain experience and manage my symptoms until the sessions started causing flare-ups (worsening of symptoms). So, I had to take a step back and re-prioritize my life again. I had to focus on healing first before I could serve others. This lead me to offering partner support classes to doula clients since I was unable to attend births or do much else at that time. But that eventually lead to more flare-ups. So, I began creating courses that I could easily distribute online without meeting in-person since everything else ended up in flare-ups. And that is how my website and online courses came about. Thankfully, I am continually healing and getting stronger, so I am excited to begin taking in-person clients again while also working on more online courses and offering wellness tools and techniques to help others within and beyond the birthing community.
During all this, I focused on healing my mind/body/soul - inside out. I learned about breathwork, yoga therapy, energy healing, sound healing, nature bathing, hot springs, cold plunges, cycle syncing, anti-inflammatory foods, supplements, acupuncture, wellness routines and much more.
Although my road to working as a doula had quite the detour, I am so thankful I was gifted the opportunity to explore birth and newborn photography. It has been an honor to document such precious memories for families, and is an art and skill I plan to carry over into my doula practice. Along with supporting women and their partners - helping them turn towards each other during labor and birth, I want to capture the raw beauty of women in their element, to show them just how strong, powerful, and capable they are.
Everything along my journey has led me to where I am today; more excited about the work I am doing than I have ever been! This is my life’s calling and I am ecstatic to have the privilege and honor to support and hold space for beautiful souls.
It has been quite the journey, but I am grateful for everything I have learned and continue to learn throughout it all.

Lauren Young
Hello friends, my name is Lauren. I am a lover of life, nature and animals. My passion is to hold space for those who wish to deeply connect with their God and inner selves - mind/body/spirit - within their unique rhythm through the beautiful journey of life.
We cannot define birth, life, nor death for anyone other than ourselves, but we can support others through the transitions. I believe all living beings are sacred and should be treated as such. And with love we can change the world - one day at a time, one breath at a time.
No matter what religion, culture, spiritual beliefs, we are all connected. Yet at the same time, we are also on our own individual journey - each of us requiring a uniquely personalized approach to wellbeing as we learn, grow, blossom, and flow. This is why I created Sacred Breath Wellness - a place to rest, recharge, and honor yourself through individualized breathwork, birth support, and wellness sessions.
